Second International Congress on Implementing the New Urban Agenda (NUA) in Newcastle, Australia, from 1–3 Nov 2018

17 Oct 2018 9:03 PM | Marilyn Maze (Administrator)

National Committee of the Australian Division of the Eastern Regional Organisation for Planning and Human Settlements (EAROPH), to invite your members to our Second International Congress on Implementing the New Urban Agenda (NUA) in Newcastle, Australia, from 13 November 2018 - see brochure.

This year's theme is Affordable and Sustainable Living in the City. This congress builds on the very successful inaugural congress held in Melbourne in 2017, and the standing congress that was formed afterwards.  At the congress website you will find the themes: leaving nobody behind, building for durability and sustainability, looking after the planet, and shaping our communities.

The 2018 congress will bring together policymakers, practitioners, and researchers from across Australia and South East Asia. The congress keynote will be Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the new Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UNHabitat).

This year's congress is being curated by a consortium led by:

  • EAROPH;
  • Compass Housing
  • UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth Initiative; and also
  • RMIT University's Centre for Urban Research.

As you may be aware, in 2016, world leaders adopted the NUA. The NUA is intended to set a new global standard for sustainable urban development, and help us rethink how we plan, manage and live in cities. The NUA is a roadmap for building cities that can serve as engines of prosperity and centres of cultural and social wellbeing, while protecting the environment. The SDGs, which form part of the NUA, are 17 goals, agreed at the United Nations in 2016, to be met by the global community by 2030 on a range of human, social, ecological, and economic development indicators. These SDGs are core to your organisation’s mission.
