ASSOCIATION OF PLACEMENT PRACTITIONERS OF

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, INC. (APPCU)

History:

In the 1980s, a small group of college and university placement officers took the initiative to form a professional organization aimed at specifically addressing issues and concerns related to their practice. The pioneering group initially named themselves as the Association of Career and Placement Officers of Colleges and Universities or ACPOCU.

The ACPOCU successfully formulated its constitution and by-laws in the early years. However, due to inevitable changes in personnel, its growth and development took a back seat in the 1990s. Efforts at sustaining the enthusiasm as well as in continuing the thrusts laid out by the pioneering group did not materialize.

More than a decade later, Iserve International Corporation hosted a coffee and cake party for colleges and universities in July 2005—an event which was to pave the way for the birth of the present association. The activity was staged primarily to forge partnerships among different college and university placement officers. To equip graduates in their search for rewarding careers, discussions on career counseling techniques and other best practices (including consulting, coaching, interview techniques) ensued. This exchange of ideas served as an impetus in reviving efforts at uniting practitioners so that initiatives at developing globally-competitive Filipino graduates could be synergized for nation-building.

School representatives met to review the constitution and by-laws initially drafted by the ACPOCU to serve as a guide in forming committees and mobilizing the group. Soon thereafter, with a SEC Registration to boot, the Association of Placement Practitioners of Colleges and Universities, Inc. (APPCU) was birthed to formally replace its predecessor.

May 8, 2008 marks the official founding of APPCU as the final review and ratification of its constitution and by-laws were carried out. Capping this momentous day was the election of its officers with Mrs. Chit Concepcion of the Ateneo de Manila University, a visionary and indefatigable leader, as the founding President. Spearheading the APPCU with her is a dynamic team of placement officers / practitioners from different schools as follows: Ms. Lena Catalan (Vice President) of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde; Ms. Ma. Gracia Gallardo-Gonzales (Corresponding Secretary) of the University of the East Manila; Ms. Claire Angeline Enriquez (Recording Secretary) of Miriam College; Ms. Juana Rosa Martinez (Treasurer) of Centro Escolar University Makati; Ms. Letty dela Paz (Auditor) of the University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta; and Ms. Amormia Rhodora Rosales (PRO) of Far Easter University. Dr. Evelyn Songco of the University of Santo Tomas and Ms. France Marie Sumang of St. Scholastica’s College serve as part of its Board of Directors.

Founding member schools include the Ateneo de Manila University, Centro Escolar University, De La Salle University, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Far-Eastern University, FEU-East Asia College, Miriam College, St. Paul University-QC, University of the East-Manila, St. Scholastica’s College, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, and University of Santo Tomas.

With a constitution and by-laws to guide its principles, APPCU was formally launched last February 20, 2009 at The Traders’ Hotel. It featured the oath-taking of its batch of founding officers. Likewise, it marked the first of a series of networking sessions with the IT and BPO sectors kicking it off. eTelecare Global Solutions sponsored the event.

Vision - Mission

Our vision is the seamless transition of Filipino graduates to the world of work through program development, the establishment of effective linkages, and collaboration with the four employment sectors.

We aim to be the leading professional organization in equipping placement officers in the academic setting with information and competencies, as well as in providing them avenues through which they can create meaningful linkages with their target publics (industries, government agencies, social development sector, and academe).

More specifically, APPCU is committed to assist in the establishment, growth, and development of functional placement programs of its member schools. We seek to: (1) enhance the knowledge, competencies, and opportunities for professional development of each member; (2) make resources and information available to its member schools for the effective and efficient delivery of their placement services; and (3) strengthen linkages among member schools and with partners in the four employment sectors.
