Starting a Career Center in Higher Education

By Dr. Lucila Bance, Ms. Joyce Tan, and Dr. Sungsik Anh
    Tue Sep 26/Wed Sep 27, 2023

Three APCDA Members will share their experiences starting or building a career center in a university.  Whether you are starting a career center, converting a placement office to a career center, or trying to improve the center you already work in, this webinar should be useful to you.  The panelists will discuss:

    • What purpose/goals/objectives would a university career center have?
    • Assuming funds are tight, what would you consider essential in your career center? (include staff, technology, books, etc.)
    • How would you sell this project to the administration and faculty
Panelists will address these three questions, then take your questions.

Understanding and Empowering Women’s Career Development — Locally and Globally

    by Barbara Suddarth
    Recorded March 10, 2020

Mao Zedong famously observed that "women hold up half the sky” and recent research demonstrates their enormous influence on both the quality of life and success profiles of children and families across cultures.  Yet, the career dreams of girls and women are often put on hold in favor of those of boys and men. As a result, many women around the world are unable to reach their full potential.  This talk will explore generational themes in gender and career achievement through the perspectives of theory and personal experience while offering practical suggestions for supporting the career choices and success of women and girls throughout our world.

Dr. Barbara Suddarth, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Career Development Alliance, is a licensed psychologist with more than 20 years of professional experience in career counseling and organizational consulting. Dr. Suddarth is a National Certified Counselor (NCC), Certified Career Counselor (CCC), and an active member of the National Career Development Association (NCDA) and the American Psychological Association. She received the Outstanding Career Practitioner Award from NCDA in 2012 and became an NCDA Fellow in 2014. Dr. Suddarth is a Master Trainer for the NCDA Facilitating Career Development training program.  She and Dr. David Reile wrote the curriculum for this training program in 2012. Dr. Suddarth is founding member of the India Career Development Association (ICDA), as well as an invited guest speaker and a member of the ICDA 2013 Conference Committee.

Challenging Ageism: Global Perspectives on Community and Workforce

    By Dr. Jennifer Luke
    Recorded on September 22, 2021

The world’s population is becoming older, due to lower birth rates and advancing medical and health wellness across many nations. By 2050, the world’s population of people over the age of 60 will double. How should society, mindsets, and worldviews change so that career practitioners, employers, and communities better adjust services, policies, technology, and support for their older community members and workers? Understanding the worldviews, challenges, assumptions, mindsets, and cultural differences towards elders is vital.

Retaining knowledge within the workforce is essential and so it is important to highlight to employers how older workers can be valuable trainers and mentors. Older community members and those within the workforce are not burdens, they are valuable contributors with experience and knowledge to give.

This webinar will cover examples of how various countries deliver on age-friendly initiatives. Case studies, global statistics and trend data relating to ageism will also be discussed. Participants will gain the understanding of the individual motivations and needs of an older worker.
