Climate Change and the Future of Work: Challenges and Opportunities
By Mr. Glen Walsh Recorded on March 30/March 31, 2023
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity today, and it has far-reaching implications for the way we live and work. We will explore the intersection of climate change and the future of work. We will begin by discussing the current state of the climate crisis and its potential impacts on various industries and occupations. We will then examine the challenges and opportunities that arise from these changes, including the need for new skills and training, the potential for green jobs and industries, and the role of technology in mitigating and adapting to climate change. We will highlight real-world examples of how businesses and workers are already responding to the challenges of climate change, from renewable energy projects and sustainable agriculture to the development of carbon-neutral transportation and buildings. We will also explore the policies and initiatives that governments and international organizations are putting in place to support these efforts.
By the end of the presentation, participants will have a better understanding of the ways in which climate change is affecting the world of work, as well as the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. They will be equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to start planning for a sustainable and resilient future.

How Has Your Work Changed?
Recorded on August 25/26, 2022
During the pandemic, many of us experienced changes in how we work. Some of those changes were reversed in places where people are no longer worried about COVID. Technology made a big jump forward, causing us to work differently and learn new skills. For example, technology may now be used to do parts of your work that you formerly did by hand, or you may spend more time Zooming and less time driving to meetings. As career practitioners, the changes for our clients impact us also. Job seekers must be prepared for AI Interviews and robotic resume screening, for example. Are jobs easy or hard to find in your area? Which skills are the most in demand? Are workers looking forward to “getting back to normal” or nervous about the changes? Has your area experienced the “Great Resignation”? Have you noticed changes in the types of things your clients care most about?
Because APCDA includes 22 member areas, hearing from our members and friends about the impact of these changes in their own area can give us some perspective on global changes.

Using Holland Typology to Quickly Assess Career Personality
By Dr. Gary Gottfredson and Dr. ZiYoung Kang Recorded Mar 7/8, 2022
Many career professionals use the theory of personalities and work environments developed by the late John Holland in their work. We use it to teach clients one way to think about themselves in vocational terms and to identify career alternatives likely to be compatible with their interests and skills. Nevertheless, experienced practitioners often use only a part of this theory. For example, counselors often focus attention on vocational personality while giving little attention to clients’ history of work and educational environments. Using the Holland structure, we can help them not only to explore career possibilities but also to construct personal narratives These narratives help give meaning to the situations clients are experiencing or construct narratives that shape their future careers.
Following a brief review of Holland’s theoretical formulations, the presenters will demonstrate a method for assessing persons through brief interviews about aspirations (or history) to arrive at classifications that exceed the validity of classification based on elaborate interest inventories – and which are quicker and less costly to use. Webinar participants will practice using the assessment technique, and then discuss the experience and get help from webinar leaders in coping with difficulties experienced.

Dealing with Trauma in Career Conversations
By Lee Richmond, PhD Recorded Jan 24/25, 2022
Trauma is a name that we give to experiences that cause us deep psychological pain. Individuals experience painful events differently depending on the age of the individual, the degree of resiliency one has, the intensity of the stressor, and whether it was a one-time event or reoccurring experience or series of happenings. However, there are several general actions we can take. A traumatized person needs to feel safe. Both mindfulness exercises and somatic exercises can help to bring calm. Somatic memory is neurological (deeply embedded). Rather than focusing on the past, the career practitioner should begin working with the now and what can be done in the now to ease the pain. This webinar is focused on helping clients work through individual traumatic events effecting a client’s career choices, and also on the traumatic effects of both natural disasters and those created by humans.

Challenging Ageism: Global Perspectives on Community and Workforce
By Dr. Jennifer Luke Recorded on Sep 22/23, 2021
The world’s population is becoming older, due to lower birth rates and advancing medical and health wellness across many nations. By 2050, the world’s population of people over the age of 60 will double. How should society, mindsets, and worldviews change so that career practitioners, employers, and communities better adjust services, policies, technology, and support for their older community members and workers? Understanding the worldviews, challenges, assumptions, mindsets, and cultural differences towards elders is vital.
<span”>Retaining knowledge within the workforce is essential and so it is important to highlight to employers how older workers can be valuable trainers and mentors. Older community members and those within the workforce are not burdens, they are valuable contributors with experience and knowledge to give.
This webinar will cover examples of how various countries deliver on age-friendly initiatives. Case studies, global statistics and trend data relating to ageism will also be discussed. Participants will gain the understanding of the individual motivations and needs of an older worker.
