The Asia Pacific Career Development Journal (APCDJ) is an international biannual publication dedicated to all career development and intervention related topics. It is the official journal of the Asia Pacific Career Development Association (APCDA).

Behind the Science of Career Development podcast will feature the Asia Pacific Career Development Journal articles.  Providing a glimpse of the work found in the journal articles.  Our first podcast is about Transgender Workplace Experience. The review was guided by a strength-based perspective, highlighting the adaptability, flexibility, and resiliency of transgender individuals.

What issues do transgender individuals experience in the workplace in the Asia Pacific region and how can counselors help them to with these issues?  In this episode, Author Danielle Lefebvre explains what she learned through her research into this fascinating topic.

Episode 2: It Takes a Village: Meet the Singapore Career Development Tribe

What is it about the career development team in Singapore that makes it so successful?  Discover the magical formula they have created for bringing out the best in everyone. 

Presenters:

Yvonne Kong-Ho, a Doctoral Student at Singapore University of Social Science, is thankful for the privilege to be able to walk alongside with people (from ages 13 to 60) who have faced career conundrums or needed greater clarity in the career-related decisions which they have had to make. Ms Kong-Ho has had 15 years of experiences in education, people and career development. Her research interests lie in the strengthening of career resilience in older workers and how best to develop younger workers towards greater career fulfillment; earlier on in their career trajectories. It is her greatest hope to see people working towards the building and strengthening of their career capital at every stage of their lives.

Jeremiah Wong, a certified Career Development Facilitator, Certified Career Service Provider and a Career Construction and Life Design Coach for Workforce Singapore, designs career development programs and capabilities for more than 50 career coaches in his organization. 

Together, they render career services to the unemployed workforce. He also has provided pro bono career services since 2013. Mr Wong is a member of NCDA and has been awarded the Singapore Public Service Excel Innovation Champion Award for Career Development Capabilities in 2018.

Episode 3: Dr. José Domene Explains the Article Publication Process

José Domene, Ph.D., immigrated to Canada with his family when he was a teenager and has a Mexican and Chinese cultural heritage. José joined the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary in 2018, having previously taught at the University of New Brunswick, and Trinity Western University in British Columbia. He teaches graduate courses in the counselling psychology EDSA and is a Registered Psychologist in Alberta.

Episode 5: Career Work for Persons with Disability is Universal

Many of us think of working with people with disabilities as something others do, but all of us are likely to develop a disability at some point in life, and we may need assistance adjusting to our new reality.

Presenters:

Dr. Tina Anctil is currently a Professor and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education at Portland State University. She is a nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, a Certified Career Counselor Educator, and a Licensed Professional Counselor. She earned her PhD in Rehabilitation Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003 and has been in the field of Rehabilitation Counseling for over 25 years. Prior to her academic career she was a vocational rehabilitation counselor with the State of Oregon. Dr. Anctil is a skilled educator and enjoys teaching and supervising both future and seasoned counselors.

Episode 6: Women Were There Too: The Early History of Career Development

What role did women play in the early days of career development?

Dr. Sarah Patterson-Mills, Ph.D., is a Licensed Professional Counselor and formerly a 7-12th certified school counselor. She earned her master’s degree in human development counseling from Saint Louis University in 2002. In 2010, she earned her doctorate in counseling and family therapy from Saint Louis University. She is writing a series about the history of women in career development for NCDA’s Career Convergences.  Her first article is “We All Want to Change the World: An Introduction to the Series, Early Women Pioneers in Career Development.”

At Harvard, Heather is able to utilize her creativity and design thinking to experiment end-to-end career coaching, leadership, and DEI programs. Heather is also a social media influencer with more than 35k followers.

Episode 9: First Gen Around the World

Whether first generation college students grow up in the US or another area, the challenges are similar and pretty intense.

Jonique Childs, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the College of Education Student Development program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Childs has previous experiences as an at-risk school counselor, college career counselor and recruiter, and clinical mental health counselor on the national suicide prevention hotline. She has served various individuals from different ethnic backgrounds to include adolescent, high school students, undergraduates, graduate students, and older adults. Her research investigates the psychosocial needs of students of color that also identify as First-Generation in K-12 and post-secondary education.

Pakistan’s career development pioneer Raza Abbas joins host Brian Hutchison for an important conversation.
